| Each class has its own garden to look after. All children have an appreciation of growing their own food, sustainability, an understanding of the world around them and a stronger sense of helping with the class gardens. With help and contributions from the community the class gardens have given the children the opportunity to have fun learning, caring, sharing and helping.
Family TreesFamilies have planted their own 'family tree' to celebrate and acknowledge their child's turangawaewae or attachment to Matatoki School. Many families have donated native, fruit and ornamental trees to beautify our school and symbolise their attachment.
Calf Club is an annual community event that takes place usually in the first week of Term Four. Children are encouraged to care for and present for judging either a calf, lamb or kid. Matatoki School students participate in the Ohinemuri Group Day, which is a cluster of surrounding rural schools hosted in turn by participating schools. There are numerous cups and prizes that are competed for on both these days. Group Day was last held at Matatoki School in 2018. All children participate and contribute to the class art and floral activities that are also submitted for judging, and displayed on the day. This is a highlight for students and results in many wonderful creations.
